One of the most important parts of your camping or backpack equipment is, of course, your tent. It is not so easy to choose a tent as you might have thought! It is a good idea to do some research about the various types of tent before you buy one and to consider which seasons and weather conditions it will be used for. You won’t want to use an all season tent for mountain trips in the winter!
Things to Think About Before Purchasing a Tent
The Weather and Season
Three classifications are used for tents denoting the season that the tent is appropriate for.
Three Season - can be used in most seasons except when it is extremely cold.
Four Season - can be used all year round even in very cold weather
All Season - usually family or car tent appropriate for camping in the summer.
Weight and Size
A tent must, of course, accomodate an appropriate number of people. It may be tempting to buy a bigger tent but if you are hiking you need to consider the weight. Tents can vary in weight so check this out at the store before you buy one that you will have difficulty hauling around.
Keeping Dry
Most tents are now coated with a waterproof chemical that also allows air to circulate. In most tents you can attach a fly to the poles to prevent water coming in but allowing ventilation. A sewn in floor for your tent is desirable.
Setting Up the Tent
You won’t want to buy a tent that is difficult to erect. The easiest to erect are A frame and dome tents. It’s easy to pack them up when you move on. Cabin tents tend to be harder.
Air Flow
Good ventilation is essential and you should look for a tent that has openings on all the sides. It’s always a good idea to have mesh screens on all sides. Insects and debris flying around in the air will be kept out by the mesh and you also get good airflow through the tent.
