Choosing A Suitable Campsite

You can camp in an organised site or somewhere that simply takes your fancy.  But there are some considerations that need to be taken into account before you commit to a camping site.Let’s look at the basics of how to choose one.

A suitable campsite can’t be chosen easily. One that suits some people and tents may not be right for you.  However, there are some basics that you should be aware of before you set up your tents for the night.

A campsite can mean two different things.First there is an organised campsite with facilities like running water, tilets & showers, and maybe even a shop and laundry.  If you are looking for a campsite with these type of facilities then remember the more facilities it has the more people it will attract, so if you are someone who cannot bear the tiniest noise after 10 pm, then try to steer away from the bigger sites.  Some very large sites may have a bar or entertainment block, which could be noisy at night.  If you love parties and loud noise, then this type of campsite will suit you, but if you don’t then don’t book into one like this, since you will probably be irritated by the noise.

The second type of campsite that you will come across is a site that you choose to pitch your camping tents, which is not an organised campsite. This could be in a field belonging to a farmer or a piece of wide open land.  If it is in a field, get the owners permission.Don’t assume you can camp there - many farmers dislike campers and may become angry if you make assumptions about their land.

If you are in a remote place, it may be nice and quiet, but you may lack access to water for boiling to drink and wash.Bottled water is fine, but don’t forget about water.Remember also the toilet facilities.  If there is a pub nearby this would be handy, but do not ignore the fact that you will need ot go to the toilet at some point!

Pitching your tent in a valley leaves you exposed to the possibility of flooding.  You should also try to avoid camping immediately adjacent to water such as a river or canal, since there will be more insects here and canals often have rats nearby, so exercise some caution near water.

But so long as you consider the issues above and choose what is right for you and for your needs, then you should have a great experience camping and have a comfortable stay.
